EVE’s EXPERIENCE:The Farmers Market in Cubao was the first fresh, produce market I went to when I was a teen-ager accompanying my grandmother , Lola Pancing Llorca Candelaria during her shopping dates, every Friday afternoon.  My  Lola ( grandmother)  always went to Farmers, to shop for ingredients to  prepare one of her special meals. My Lola taught me that good cooks started with very fresh ingredients and insisted I learn how to buy seafoods, meat, vegetables, and fruits in season, when these are abundant and less expensive.

The Evolution of Dapitan Shopping

Dapitan Street in Sta. Mesa Heights began as a traffic hazard.

It started when some individuals thought of hauling off export overruns from local factories and dumping them at their sidewalk stalls to sit side-by-side with their local produce of vegetables and fruits. Most of these were ceramic dining ware, an endless variety of knick knacks, home decor, hundreds of baskets of different sizes and styles, papier mache products, wrought iron garden accessories, and other items. It so happened the majority of the ceramic products carried Christmas themes. It so  happened also that Christmas was a few months away.

OUR NOBLE JUNGLE FOWL

ImageLittle credit has been given to our jungle fowl. This is a very brave animal, capable of killing poisonous snakes to protect their young. They are most commonly known as the “fighting cock” and have been interbred with the imported,  bigger, higher flying, “Texas Fighting Cock,” brought in by game fowl aficionados to improve the local stock.

I am an animal lover, and detest using animals for sport, or for the cruel amusement of watching two roosters fight to the death.
